does anyone know of any good songs with clarinet duets/trios/quartets/ensembles with ONLY CLARINET? I'm actually a guitarist/pianist/violinist/singer, but I love the clarinet and i've been searching on kazaa for weeks. All I can ever find is clarinet concertos with orchestras and clarinets solos. I want to hear the instrument harmonized. Anyone?

Rubank publishes two volumes of duets. I believe they also publish volumes for trios and clarinet choirs.

As for Kazza - you won't find much, if anything, in the way of recorded clarinet duets or trios. Occasionally over the past month there has been the Opperman Clarinet Choir playing Barber's Adagio available.

If you want to purchase recordings of harmonized clarinets in duo, trio or ensembles you'll have a better chance of getting something. There are recordings of concertos for two clarinets, clarinet choirs, clarinet trios, and pieces for two clarinets and piano readily available.

...and yes, the sound of harmonized clarinets is incredible.

In classics [I really dont know all that much about them], some of the earliest use of clarinet duos was by Mozart, he had a friend who played well!, try his later works. Beethoven did also like cls, try the 6th and 8th Symps. etc . The "Romantic" and later 1800-1900 composers, French in particular, wrote much for cl. I partic. enjoy R Strauss tone poems. Don

I forgot to mention the "booklet" entitled "Clarinet Sessions" which has many duets, trios and others for both practice and performance. Try searching the Sheet Music Plus site linked above as well as B&N and Amazon, and music stores carrying a stock of printed "books" etc. Luck, Don

I second the vote for 'Clarinet Sessions.' What a terrific book! Dee is correct in saying that Rubank publishes trios for clarinets. There are two volumes, and both have excellent material that's relatively easy to perform.

As for recordings, one that should be fairly available is "Blues for Sabine" on EMI. This is Sabine Meyer's clarinet group Trio di Clarone with Eddie Daniels as a guest star. I've seen it both in the classical section under Sabine Meyer, and in the jazz section under Eddie Daniels.

Much of the music is third stream, but the Poulenc duet is on there. Also a very nice version of Chelsea Bridge for soloist and quartet.

Even though it's not purely clarinet's Don Byron's album Bug Musik features some terrific three-horn transcriptions from John Kirby and Raymond Scott. The Kirby material has some fantastic blending of clarinet, alto sax and muted trumpet.

Another excellent duet comes from the tenor sax team of Zoot Sims and Al Cohn. The song is called Two Funky People, but I forget the album name. Unfortunately, it's the only clarinet cut on the CD. Everything else is tenor saxes.

Hope this helps.
