I can't get past Janet Hilton's sound. Charles Neidich's virtuosity is astounding, but for me there are too many things he does simply because he can (such as tonguing the sextuplets at the end of # 2), and not because they make musical sense.
Gervase de Peyer's recording of # 2 (with Spohr # 1) is one of the truly great clarinet recordings.
Sabine Meyer and Jon Manassee are my favorite couplings.
Best regards.
Ken Shaw

I've just purchased Karl Leister with Berlin Philarmonic, very good. Good phrasing and sound.

Hilton's is great musically but like Ken I find the sound jarring. I like the original instrument account by Lawson. It has a real feeling of living on the edge, and the tone is mostly very appealing.

Jon Manasse and the Brooklyn Philharmonic (Foss), does everything just right, walking that fine line between his own interpretive creativity and Weber's intentions.
For a look into the way it may have first sounded, Tony Pay's recording using a copy of a 7 key clarinet (with 2 extra keys added) is at the other end of the spectrum, and not to be missed. The pitch used on that recording is A=430Hz...GBK

Ohhhhh, Good topic! I am working up weber two for a concerto competetion and I have been listening to the Jon Manasse recording non stop. He has amazing tone quality, so fluid with over tones and his musicality is astounding. Everytime I listen to his recording I seem to find a new musical idea or nuance.
I hvae the paul meyer recording, that is also very good. I wouldn't mind getting the neidich recording or the leister recording. Are they avalible at like amazon.com?

I reccomend the Neidich recording with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. It has Concerto No 1+2, Concertino, and the Rossini Intro, Theme, and Variations. Excellent recording and wonderful improvisation!

The DePeyer recording of the Weber 1st Concerto (circa 1965) was the first classical clarinet recording I ever purchased and has remained a favorite of mine for many years. And yes, I still have this recording, although it suffers from numerous scratches. I recently purchased Sabine Meyer's recording of the 1st and 2nd Concertos and find her versions of both Concertos to be very satisfying.

I haven't heard it in years, but I think the young Karl Leister (well younger) with Rafael Kubelik and the Berlin Philharmonic really captures the style and sound of the piece.
It's been reissued by DG in a couple of budget releases, but apparently not in the US. You can get it online though. http://www.musicabona.com/catalog1/453990-2.html

There is also an exceptional recording of Michael Collins which I heard in a radio broadcast which floored me! Worth looking for, may be on Virgin Classics...

Tony pay's rendition on his period clarinet and conducting the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightment (Virgin) is definitely among my favourite with Paul Meyer.
Sharon Kam's version is definitely worth listenning to as well (Teldec?)
