i personally feel that musical pieces shouldn't be just written, but developed bit by bit in a process which may take months, years, decades, or entire lifetimes.
as for me, i have tried writting numerous small pieces, mostly for the piano and many written years ago back in elementry days. a couple of these have some very attractive melodies and some time in my life, i will start putting these together into one significant piece maybe worthy of being published.
and melodies aren't all, because to really write a professional composition, things like form must be thought out carefully, and this is a particularly area i'd like to work on before i make any real attempts of composing.

In order for creative, innovative composition, freedom of thought must be present. To write "in the style of" or within the contraints of classic form or harmonic structure can be limiting factors to that creative process. I would recommend that you first write down that "melody in your head" and then let it naturally develop and "become all that it can be" as you harmonize and orchestrate it. If your creative needs are in conflict with a "classic rule", then break it!!! Over analysis can truely be paralysis to discovering new ways of doing old things.
Composition???? Just Do It!!!!

William is right, but you have to know the rules before you can break them.
There are textbooks on composition; maybe start there? Do a search on amazon and plenty will come up.

Thanks everyone, I very much agree with ALOMARvelous12 when you said it may take years, decades.... that's why when my music teacher told us 1 and a half weeks before exams (and the due date of my composition) that we are to write a composition, and then I have to perform the piece in front of my class. To make matters worse I am writing a trio for the alto clarinet, Bb clarinet, and the alto sax and I have only attempted solos before so now I am trying to write it on the piano and then transpose it after (which will be my first time transposing anything) and I really don't want to perform something that will not be perfected to the way I want it to be (with 1 and a half weeks that will never happen) oh well I shall bite my tounge and go on with it.
