Comments  American Standard was written for British clarinettist Peter Furniss in 1993. It was first performed that year at Shrewsbury School in Shrewsbury, England. It has since been performed by various players in the U.K., Belgium, and San Francisco. Schizophrenic and mostly light in tone, this is a crowd pleaser that wears its heart on one sleeve and a clown face on the other. There are soaring and poignant lyrical passages, and raucous dance-like sections.
