 Notation software for Balkan music
Author: vintschevski

Hi!

Can anybody suggest a good notation software programme for writing out and listening to pieces in 7/8, 11/16 and so on?

I've been using MuseScore (because it's free!), and it's easy to use, but its limitations are irritating. For example, although one can "insist" on a 7/8 pattern of 3+2+2, the system won't obey, it simply won't group quavers into an easily readable pattern and the result can make a score difficult for musicians to follow. A Balkan pattern for 9/8 as 2+2+2+3 won't be recognised, the result will always be rendered as 3+3+3 (even though one can try to "insist" on a grouping of notes as 2+2+2+3 - it just doesn't work).

I have no experience whatsoever with things like Sibelius (apart from listening to scores on Score Exchange and I must say that these come across, simply from the point of view of the sound of different instruments, as bloody awful). Can anybody who has tried a few of these programmes recommend one which is particularly good for this sort of music? I'd appreciate any advice in this regard.

Thanks heaps!!

Good question. You might do best to talk to university people who use Sibelius or Finale and see what they say about defining grouping preferences.

I use Finale and, while it does require a bit of tweaking to get the appropriate groupings for Balkan stuff, it does work. I just upgraded to Finale 2012 and haven't had a chance to check out the new "Garritan" sounds yet, but it does list Kaval as an option! :) (I only wish it had Clarinet in C as an option...)

sibelius works like a charm . You can easily choose the groupings as you like/want them . Lots of sounds included . Playback : didn't use that a lot , and how things sound for a balkan music score is a difficult question to answer.

Did write a few scores in irregular 11/8 , 7/8 and 9/8 for some bands ( cornet, accordeon, violin, double bass , klarinet ) : no problem at all
