Hi~
I just had my 2nd lesson and finally decided on getting a Vandoren M30 mouthpiece, 3.0 Reeds and a metal ligature. I tried the leather but I truly had a hard time :P
my question is, how do i start to practice and improve? I can only only do up to the left fingers, when i switch to the right side, seems to squeak or just air comes out! I know takes practice but i saw the fingering chart, not sure which one to start?!
any tips would be greatly appreciated

Hi There,
If you're finding your clarinet squeaks a bit you might try working on your embouchure a bit, as a poorly formed embouchure is a common cause for this (there is also a pretty comprehensive video here running through the other potential causes and solutions for squeaking). Your embouchure, or the way your mouth is formed to create the proper sound, is one of the most challenging aspects of this instrument for new musicians. Even musicians experienced with other wind instruments have trouble getting the hang of the clarinet's unique reed and mouthpiece.
Once you've determined your embouchure is solid, my second suggestion is to study your fingering chart and use it to learn and practice clarinet scales. Start slow with these and practice a little bit each day. Work on trying to play them fluidly and without looking back at the fingering chart--this will help you internalize the positions. Finally, when you get to chromatic scales, you'll find you can play with much more fluidity overall.
Learning clarinet can be really rewarding. So I hope you choose to stick with it.
