I find that the inability to do fine scraping stems primarily from not having a properly sharpened reed knife. I have 7th-grade students who successfully learned how to scrape tips with just a few tries after I made sure their knife was sharp and properly honed so that the knife burr is correctly positioned. There are many YouTube videos on reed knife sharpening...here are several good ones:

The 2nd video is about the Wicked Edge sharpening system, which I own and highly recommend. With it, I can sharpen several knives in a few minutes to scary sharpness.
