Hi, Drew -

I've used a dial indicator for years - don't know whether you are talking about an actual micrometer, with a screw adjustment or an indicator with a dial face and a spring loaded anvil. Either way, I suggest you go to Martin Schuring's website and use his dimensions as a starting place. If you measure a couple of reeds you really like, I'm willing to bet they are somewhere close to his numbers.

His web site is: http://www.public.asu.edu/~schuring/main.html

A suggestion: the dimensions you are shooting for in the center/ corners of the tip are around .07/.04 mm, so lower the anvil of tour dial indicator or screw down the anvil of the micrometer very gently in the thin portions of your measurements. A .01 mm difference doesn't mean much in the heart, but is critical in the tip...

I'm firmly convinced, both as a reed maker and a machinist, that measured consistency is the key to success. In most machining operations, ±.005 inch (1.25 mm) is considered close tolerance. In reed making, .01 mm difference in the tip can be the difference between success and failure. Your measuring tools can lie to you if you aren't really careful about how you use them..

Enjoy your new found window on reality!
