 Vintage oboe reed depth

I'm experimenting with a vintage piccolo (musette) oboe and managed to get a reed for it eventually. However, the socket does not seem to have a clearly demarcated bottom to it. Can anyone give me any insight into how deep the cork should be pushed in?

I have no idea about musettes but oboes with no defined reed well are like early oboes. The amount you put in can be variable, as evidenced by the thread instead of cork that was used on staples back then. That's also how one makes absolute pitch adjustments. There will be an optimal position for your type of reed which you'll have to figure out on your own. If it's not optimal, some notes may not work well.

Yup. It's definitely an older instrument in addition to being smaller (probably pitched around F/Eb). 6 keys. Worst case, as you say, I'll play around with different depths and see what works.

Some older German oboes have tapered reed sockets which are fine for threaded staples, but with corked staples (or Legere reeds) you have to taper the cork.

With an instrument as short as a musette, you have to make sure the reed goes in far enough so the Cs are in tune with each other - if the 2nd space C is flatter than low C, then you'll need to shorten the staple and also the reed if the top register C is flat.
