There is a Dutch thumb rest that Howarth has on their website made of wood, and I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with it.

I'm sure someone could fashion a wooden version or have them CNC milled, only it would need some sort of quick release fitting. The simplest would be a knurled or slotted thumbscrew that grips against the back of an existing thumbrest (that's not fitted with a sling ring) when tightened.

Something like that would have never crossed my mind, if the tolerances were tight enough, I could just remove the existing thumb plate and replace it with something like you suggested.

Whatever design it takes, if it is too bulky to fit in the case and risks the keywork being bent, it has to be easily removable.
With a grub screw, the tolerances don't have to be an exact fit provided the front side of the slot that covers the existing thumbrest is radiused as near to the thumbrest as possible, as well as the underside having sufficient clearance for the thumbrest baseplate and also radiused to match the radius of the lower joint for stability.
Something like an M5 or even M6 thread grub screw will do the trick of securing it and the radius of the screw tip also matching the inside radius of the back of the thumbrest.
No alterations would have to be made to the instrument.

I didn’t think about it being too bulky, I believe my case has a larger space for something like that though.
I agree that a grub screw would be the best bet for that. I have carved out of wood an approximate form for what I could use, but placing that where it would be thick enough to not be milled through would bring the position of my thumb too low for my liking. A solution to this could be to 3d print a thumb plate with the proper radius that protrudes out less from the instrument, but making it thicker to compensate for the difference in material strength. Then after that I could adjust the wood thumb rest part to fit the curvature of the oboe and the new thumb plate, leaving enough room for the thumb rest baseplate.
With the grub screw, I could also make it be able to seat inside the printed thumb rest a bit for more security.
