was wondering if I can ask you a question - I am a beginner and own a nice OBOE it already went through the shop for minor adjustments , and does not need any more work - the OBOE is vacuum tight both joints - but for some reason I can not play the low C or B or Bb - actually sometimes I can but not consistently. I had an oboe instructor (not mine) play the oboe up and down and she was able to get all the notes. So, I am thinking at this point it could be a reed or me ? I have made a few reeds of my own and notice that if I lower the resistance to play I can hit the low notes easier - BUT that is not always the case. Do you have any suggestions that I should be concentrating on when adjusting a reed to allow the lower notes speak instead of making a high pitch squeak. I have a loree series B with no f reso vent and no Bb reso key. — Thank you Stephen

You might not be blowing hard enough. In the lower register, you have to do the following things to be successful:
- Open your teeth so as not to squeak. You need to open them about as much as if you were going to take a big bite out of an apple.
- Blow a large volume of air to fill up the open space you have created. To do this, your throat must be wide open.
- Close your lips down to a mezzo-piano dynamic to keep the note from honking, even while your teeth are wide open.
Your reed might also be contributing. It must vibrate freely and be fairly open to get the low notes without honking or squeaking.

Also, the farther inside your mouth the reed is, the higher it wants to play (Think of what you do to crow the reed.) So be careful that it is not in too far. I consciously open my throat for the low notes and even though I am not an advanced player, that makes them sound easily.
Oh, and my teacher would say "close your lips around the reed" ... which worked.

You are totally new to oboe and making reeds already? That is very strange unless maybe you're a bassoon player? If you don't really know how to play the instrument how can you make reeds that are appropriate? You should try it without a reed you've made.
