Do you need an F reso key if you are playing a Left F or the lower joint 1 and 2 and the key next to that. Or is the f reso key just needed to play a forked F - thanks

F reso is there to make the forked F more resonant. The left F is just another fingering of regular F.
If you have an F reso key, try closing it with your pinky while playing forked F and see what it does to your tone and pitch.

I dont have one - I just want to feel good about knowing that I can play an f using the left f or the RH1 and 2 and the banana key.

A Forked F vent is fitted to take the stuffiness out of the forked F fingering (it compensates for RH3 being closed), hence the name 'forked F vent' as it's open or opens when the forked F fingering xxx|xox is used.
An F resonance key is a different thing entirely and usually found on German spec oboes to stabilise F when played with the keyed fingering xxx|xx/o - it's a small closed standing key that's opened by the F key.
On oboes without the forked F vent fitted, you'll have to vent the forked F fingering with the Eb key (RH or LH Eb key depending on the context).

That's interesting Chris. I have always heard what you call the "forked F vent" called the "F resonance key" by every American oboist I have discussed it with. This may be because F. Loree refers to it on their website as "forked F resonance key."
