 Need advice not playing well

My Cabart Special has all new pads and regulated as best as I could and know how. I have good suction / pressure on both joints but when I first blow it plays well then second and subsequent blows the oboe plays high squeaky notes when I press the Eb and D keys - its strange because the upper joint never has an issue but when I attach the bottom joint on the trouble starts. Any tips would be helpful thanks

Check the RH C-D trill key linkage isn't holding the top joint C-D trill key open - there should be some double action in both the linkage and the trill beam on the top joint. Also check the C-C# trill key is closing and there's also some free play in the linkage.

Make sure RH1 is closing and not being held open by the link to the G# pad cup or by the con bar on the side of the top joint. RH1 should have double action both before and after it operates the con bar - the initial double action is to ensure the top joint Bb and C keys are closed whilst RH1 is open, then some more double action just before RH1 is fully closed (after the top joint Bb and C keys are fully open) and also check there's a gap between the top end of the con bar and the top joint surface when RH1 is held closed.

I'm not sure which key you mean by the 'D key'. If you're talking main action fingerplates, then label them after the finger that operates them (LH1, LH2, LH3, RH1, RH2, RH3) as calling them by a note name can be inaccurate and vague at best. Technically speaking, the note D (xxx|xxx) issues from the tonehole operated by the low C key and not from RH3 (which is where E issues from).

I agree with Chris that the C-D trill key might be open and causing the problem.

thanks Chris - yes I should name them better - when I press the rh2 or rh3 everything seems to squeak high

Has it got the conservatoire 1-2-3 mechanism whereby putting any RH fingers down will give Bb and C?

Also check the regulation of RH2 and 3 with the small F# key (the one between RH1 and 2) to be sure that's closing. And check the RH2 pad being a perforated one isn't leaking around the edge of the pad cup - if it is leaking (but seating when tested with a feeler gauge), seal all around the edge of the pad where it meets the pad cup with wax as well as the inside of the aperture where it meets the back of the pad cup to be sure it's airtight.

Sure Chris - it seems to play a little better now that I took my time and made a better cork pad and filed it down ( i think it was too high in the back. But this OBOE does not have a split rh3 ring or a F - reso key. I keep playing - right now it is not in tune because the reed does not crow a c yet -
