I've noticed lately that there are not many listings of second hand Oboes on Ebay these days. At the moment there are a couple of Buffet's and another one with the brand name 'The Sound'. And that's it. I'm not including the Chinese 'Professional' Oboes in C sold with the important accessory of a pair of high quality white cotton gloves and for good reason. Oboe in C ? What other tonality would a Oboe be in ? Bb ?
There use to be 12 or more Ebay pages of second hand Oboes for sale including a number of very interesting antique ones.
I"m still using the same 'search' method as I've always done.

I search also on the UK and US sites, but used the advanced setting in my search, to filter out a lot of the junk. In Australia, there are not many, but I recently bought a nice Louis, similar to the one I play on for $250 recently. Musicalchairs is an interesting site worth checking out. it is UK based and you are more likely to find Thumbplate oboes on there.

There is not a lot on there just at the moment, but it is surprising what pops up there. There was an old Louis d'amore a year ago for 2500 English pounds that I kick myself for not finding the money and buying.

Thats weird it works for me anyway maybe my computer is set to recognize that link ? Try searching OBOES under woodwind instruments - there over 4000 OBOE related items and tons of OBOES.

Yes. Done that. My search on Ebay is Oboe/ Woodwind Instruments. What comes up is a total of only 27 oboes of which 22 are the usual Chinese rubbish. You know , the 'Professional Oboe in C , white cotton gloves included.
What amuses me is that these Chinese Oboes are always in C. What a joke ! And they can stick their white cotton gloves up that place where the sun doesn't shine.

The other thing to consider is that eBay is not really recognised by most as the best place to purchase an oboe. They are often sold by non-oboists that often have no idea in regards to defects, quality etc, or it can be used to offload instruments that have inherent problems. You also have to consider when going on eBay whether or not you want thumbplate or conservatoire, because if searching on overseas ebay sites, that is a serious consideration. People often sell their second hand instruments through professionals who know what they are talking about such as Hannah from "The Oboe Fairy", Carlos Coelho http://carlosoboe.com, Crowthers, Howarth, Peter Hurd (oboes.us) Richard Craig...etc as they often buy second hand instruments outright or sell on consignment. If you purchase from a well known and respected source, the chances of getting a defective instruments are next to zero, and you also have people who stand by what they sell. On saying that, one can get a good bargain on eBay, but chances are, you are more likely to purchase a lemon. Then there are the fake listings that crop up from time to time.

I think being a seller on ebay is risky (I was told not to sell an expensive instrument on ebay by someone who did that, had the instrument returned, and it was not the one he sent out; imagine trying to deal with THAT. "He said she said.") I was extremely lucky to get my Rigoutat off ebay at a wonderful price for a wonderful oboe. But the other sellers out there for oboes are perhaps a better bet, although you are likely to pay more, because they are selling to the oboe community and not just some yahoo who has an ebay account.

That would have been a Peter Hurd listing, I would imagine. I think Peter had the only snakewood Hiniker ever built.

Tom Hiniker has now completed a total of four Snakewood oboes. Another two (?) may be in process- takes years from start to finish.
One is gold plated, three silver plated I believe. All have left C# key. Fully polymer lined upper and lower joints. The sleeving seems to have zero effect on the timbre of the instrument- still sounds like Snakewood. The Hiniker Snakewood oboe is simply not like anything else I have ever played in the realm of oboe. The first Snakewood oboe Tom made (was listed on Ebay) is still the single most appealing (and amazing) oboe I have ever played. A professor friend of mine just purchased a new Hiniker Snakewood oboe. It is mind bending fabulous in every conceivable respect. The present price for a silver plated Hiniker Snakewood oboe is $14,500, though I surmise this price will rise next year. Gold plating is an extra $2000. Tom's wait list is well over 100 names, estimated 10-12+ year wait at the moment. Tom is presently making an oboe for me out of Cocuswood...

Oh come on! There are quite a few oboes on ebay at the moment! Ebay UK, anyway.
Of course, ebay isn't always the ideal place to buy one, but (apart from the Chinese lot) there are some decent looking professionally refurbished Lorees - one is dual system, and from a reputable seller too, and there are others from sellers with 100 per cent feedback.
There is the usual crop of Louis "made for Rudall Carte", and the Howarth B models.
In addition there are always more B & H Regents than you could, in the common phrase, "Shake a stick at"!

Skyfacer, your comment about oboes "in C" reminds me of my reaction to real estate ads that talk about a "sparkling pool." I have always wanted to contact an agent and say I would have loved to see that house but the fact that the pool sparkles is a deal breaker.

I have to ask: why are you always searching on eBay? Are you looking to buy an oboe sight-unseen and unplayed?
Do you not care what it plays like? What it sounds like? What the intonation is? Quite a few of the instruments that have a defect like bad intonation, a damaged bore, or a poorly-repaired crack end up on eBay because the nobody wants to buy it after playing on it.

Hi Hotboy. That's a good point. But it is fun to check out what's available on Ebay.
I actually picked up an excellent 'knock about' Oboe from this site. It's a Bundy English TP and it plays quite well. Only cost me $Aus380
I now use it in my local theatre orchestra and my fellow musicians say it sounds nice. It plays well in tune and is 'reed friendly'
But it's to one's advantage to already know a fair bit about Oboes before 'shopping' in Ebay. This particular Oboe came from a seller in Great Britain who specialises in reconditioning Oboes and Clarinets. And there was a 'return' offer if not satisfied. She has a good reputation as a Ebay seller.

You can know everything there is to know about oboes and still buy an instrument that is "blown out" and has a poor scale. There are a lot of cruddy old instruments out there.

What is meant by "reconditioning"? Many resellers of instruments just polish them up, tweak a few screws, put them in a new case, and sell for a profit.

I guess all you'd be out would be the return shipping cost, but I have not found an instrument priced at lower than $5,000 that I would be happy playing...but I guess that's just me and my standards...

Hi Hotboy. What I meant by 'reconditioning' was , well , she reconditions Clarinets and Oboes. That is , she gets them back into good playing condition.
I also have high standards and in this case I realise that I got lucky. And yes, I would have had to pay for the returned postage.
There are many in the world of Oboe playing that find it difficult to believe that there are Oboes that actually play quite well yet don't have a 'budget breaking ' price on them. It has to be acknowledged that such Oboes are not good enough for the professional Oboists who have to perform to a very high standard. But that's not the world that I live in.
And just to give you some idea of just how good this plastic TP Bundy is. I recently performed Grace Mary Williams 'Carillons for Oboe' on it. It was not up to the professional standard that I hear on a recording that I have, but that was just me playing it. Incidentally, the pianist had her work 'cut out' just getting her hands around the piano reduction score.
I had no actual problem with the Bundy itself as to intonation, ease of playing and tonal quality except for the low Bb which is somewhat flat in pitch. It has no low Bb vent hole of course.
Williams's Oboe piece has six of them , five of which are in the 4th movement. I can 'lip' this note up to a certain extent. The B natural is also slightly flat. It's a matter of just learning to adapt to the instrument that you have (within reason). Fortunately also , this particular Oboe is 'reed friendly, so the above mentioned problem of flatness in the lowest notes is dealt with to a certain extent.
