Woodwind quintet literature with Cor Anglais
Author: mberkowski

Hi all,

I'm interested in finding literature for woodwind quintet (fl,ob,cl,hn,bsn) that makes use of the Cor Anglais/English horn either partially or throughout. There's the 3rd movement of the Nielsen quintet - that movement itself is probably manageable but overall the piece is likely too challenging for the amateur group I play with.

I think I may have seen a woodwinds transcription of the Mozart Adagio for EH & Strings K580a at some point. And if not, it wouldn't be difficult to produce a transcription.

What other works are out there? Original compositions for that instrumentation or quintet arrangements / transcriptions are suitable.

Thanks for your input

Michael

If you fancy a challenge, and can get together with another wind quintet; there is the Enescu Decet (Dixtuor) for winds. A fabulous piece altogether, one of the oboists plays CA throughout.

This is one of the best performances I have found on youtube:

I wasn't familiar with this work before but I quite like it, thanks. Our chances of partnering with another quintet are slim, as it's hard enough to sustain ourselves as 5 unfortunately.

Haha, no problem. But it happens that I work in a University library and intended to pull the Nielsen from the music stacks today. You saved me the trip to that building in the short term by linking the IMSLP - the parts were not listed due to US copyright but the direct PDF link is accessible and I can use it for my own first read. I'll grab the library's copy for my ensemble to look at later.

D’rivera’s Aires Tropicales. Great Piece w at least 1 if not two movements featuring EH. A tough piece from an ensemble standpoint but well worth it.

Oh I like this piece. One of the later movements includes the alto flute too.

On a more traditional line, try the Two Andantes & Adagio "Pour le Cor Anglais" by Reicha, scored for wind quintet with cor instead of oboe. They are very pretty, fun to play, and not very difficult. The cor gets all the glory, the rest of the ensemble is mostly accompaniment.

Best wishes
Hans

Thank you for the suggestion - this is exactly the kind of work appropriate for the ensemble I'd play with. I have performed some of the Reicha Op88 quintets in the past and find them tremendously fun to play. He had such a mastery of scoring for the mixed timbres of a wind quintet.
