I see references here to grade 8 repertoire or whatever, and that must be a Euro thing. Is there some online site where I can see what these grades mean, and what the repertoire is by grade? As a degreed musician and ex-pro on another instrument, all I have to learn is the physical technique. When I was taking lessons (a while back now because I lost several years to a bad illness) I was going through the Vade Mecum for technique, and had one other book but can't remember what it was. I sold it all when it did not appear I was going to survive, but survive I did and I'm back at it again. I'd like to find out what this graded literature is and possibly follow that course in addition to getting back at the Vade Mecum course of progress. Thank you!

If u google search
Abrsm oboe syllabus
It comes up
I am hopeless at deciding what level pieces are. So I use the syllabus as my guide, and then imslp as my supply. I download as many pieces as I can, and make little graded books of my own.
Then after that is the diploma syllabus. Same website. Different link though
Trinity college syllabus can also be downloaded somewherw.
I think if u found your local abrsm rep, they will send u a paper copy of the syllabus for free.
Grade 8 is the highest grade before diploma. And is a prereq... I am doing mine in June... So pretty excited.

You can either do each grade or skip them, but you do need to have passed Grade 5 Theory to do Grade 6 and above.
I've only taken grades on clarinet - started on Grade 4 as my teacher thought Grade 3 was too easy (and got distinction), then had to take Grade 5 Theory (got 93/99) and then Grade 6 (merit) and 8 (distinction).
How does the American system work? I keep reading about First Chair and All State over on the clarinet board, but not sure how that equates to our grading system in the UK.
The various grades were also named:
Grade 1 - Primary
Grade 2 - Elementary
Grade 3 - Transitional
Grade 4 - Lower
Grade 5 - Higher
Grade 6 - Intermediate
Grade 7 - Advanced
Grade 8 - Final
Former oboe finisher
Howarth of London
1998 - 2010
The opinions I express are my own.

wow chris. I never heard of the names for the grades! how interesting!
My clarinet history was grade 8 only. But my violin history was similar to yours, grade 3, 6, 8.. seemed to me to be a fair number to do. an early one to get used to playing the instrument for the exam. A higher one, and then the highest.
These days i go straight for grade 8! enrolled in June... practise oboe last january, then found i only had time for one instrument, so did clarinet. picked oboe back up in januray this year.. but found a crack in it.. grr.. well.. the rest you read in the other threads!

Just to add, ABRSM is going to release new repertoire for woodwind (including oboe of course) in July this year. It'd be interesting to see their choices.
