Hi everyone. I've been spending my time designing a fingering chart for the Thumb Plate system Oboe. If there are any Oboists who use this system please feel free to check it out and give me some 'feedback' on what you think of it. or preferably I could send you it via e-mail as I think it would be much easier to read. Just by typing it out and copying and pasting here brings out some problems in reading it.

Fingering Chart for the English Thumb Plate Oboe.
This is a fingering chart for the Thumb Plate system Oboe, also know as the English Thumb Plate. This includes all the basic fingerings with extra fingerings for certain notes and a few 'harmonic' fingerings that work very well also.
Here are the symbols used for the fingering chart itself.
<> = half hole (finger one LH)
X = Finger down on tone hole
O = Finger off tone hole.
|| = Left Hand fingers 123 on the left and Right Hand fingers 345 in the right.
Tp = Left Hand thumb down on Thumb Plate. (no TP show = Thumb Plate not down.)
8ve 1 = Octave key above TP opened.
8ve 2 = Octave Key on side opened.
Xs = The small touch piece for finger one (as well as covering first tone hole)
Plus the various touch keys as follows :- LH = G# B Bb Eb.
RH = Bb F C C# Eb

well done barry! i have no idea about thumb plate, so can't proof reed.
But I have been lamenting the lack of clear charts.
I love the one on this website, but maybe i need to print it out and stick it on my wall while i get used to all the trill fingerings.. There are a few that still stump me when i am trying to embellish a baroque piece.

Hi Sarah. My chart is not exactly a 'clear chart' because of the way it comes out when I copy and paste to this BB. It's much clearer when looked at on my Open Office page. I just thought it would be fun to see how much of a job it would be to type out a fingering chart with only what you have on the keyboard.
Fingering charts for the English Thumb Plate Oboe are not readily available these days. Only that of the Conservatoire is given , even in Gossen's book. The ones that I know of are what is in Anthony Baines book which is very good but only gives the basic ones. The DR Downing's Professional TP Chart which has a few errors in it. And the Learn As You Play book for Oboe which is very basic. Remarkably. the very comprehensive Woodwind Fingering Guide (www.wfg.woodwind.org) site does not even include the Thumb Plate Oboe system in its guide. Even though the differences are only with the C and Bb and also with certain high notes this guide is lacking any fingering details.

Just did a search here on the Oboe BB and have found Chris's which he presented way back in 2007-03-02. It is better layed out than mine Easier to figure out. I might simplicfy mine by using his layout if he'll give me permission.

I would love a font that could be filled in... Similar to doctor Downing's...
I use the conservatoire one.. And some of the third octave do 2nd wrong choices didn't seem to be standard ones... But each hmm oboe is individual.
I love ridenour books of clarinet fingering. One of those for oboe would be a godsend.

Anything I've posted on here is free for anyone to use, so feel free to copy anything you want.
As I haven't got a pure thumbplate system oboe, there are some trills, tremolos and harmonic fingerings that can be done using either by lifting off the thumbplate or using the side key in conjunction with other fingerings.
The best thing to do is experiment and see what alternative fingerings for some notes can be made using fingerings not found in published fingering charts (provided they give well tuned notes) if they make things easier than using regular fingerings.

Hi Chris . Thanks for that. I've modified my chart to generally follow your layout of (Low, Middle. and High registers) The problem with posting such entries into the BB forum is that it all looks OK after editing but when you hit the 'update' button everthing is piled all over on the left hand side making it difficult to read. But as I mentioned previously. if anyone wants it more clearly layed out I can e-mail it to them. This is purely a fingering chart but doesn't include trill fingerings as such. The Rubank Advance Books 1 and 2 have a comprehensive chart for trill fingerings that a Thumb Plate Oboist will have to figure out from the Conservatoire system given. Not all that difficult as most are the same anyway.

The three main systems (thumbplate, ring key conservatoire and plateaux/Gillet conservatoire) each have their own different fingerings for the Ab-Bb (G#-A#) trill.
On pure thumbplate systems (Howarth S1/S2/S10/S20/B model, W&W TW1/TW2/TW3, B&H Regent/Emperor/Imperial, Orsi/Prestini/Louis LM5/Selmer Sterling and other Italian imports) you'd play Ab (G#) and trill with the side key for the Bb. While I haven't tried it, the side key may also give a high F# (in addition to the standard altissimo F fingering, just as adding the side Bb key does on saxes).
On ring key conservatoire systems (Howarth S3, conservatoire system B&H Emperor/Imperial, older German oboes. etc.) you'd play Ab (G#) and trill with the upper side key for the Bb. The side Bb key on these oboes also doubles as a high F# key (as does the side Bb key on saxes).
On plateaux or Gillet conservatoire systems that have the Ab-Bb trill linkage fitted (the small piece of linkage connecting the G# key to the LH2 fingerplate), you'd play Ab (G#) and trill with LH finger 2.
An upper register A#-B (Bb-B/Bb-Cb) trill can be done on thumbplate/dual system oboes with the usual thumbplate fingering for Bb (A#) and trilling with RH fingers 1 and 2 together - adding RH 1 and 2 will give a harmonic fingering for high B (8ve2, thumb off thumbplate, xxo|xxo). On conservatoire systems using the conservatoire fingering for Bb (A#), trill with RH finger 2 for the B.

Just got a second hand copy of the Otto Langley tutor book for Oboe published by Boosey & Hawkes. Enjoyed working through it again. Brought back pleasant memories of practicing out of this tutor with my Bundy Thumb Plate. It has a fingering chart for the Thumb Plate system as well as the Conservatoire system although it is only the basic fingerings. There are several mistakes also but no problem sorting that out
