Buffet Cooper were those horrendous flutes made by B&H.

The 4051 oboe is made by Schreiber for Buffet:

You're better off with a Howarth S20c, Marigaux Strasser 801, Fossati Tiery J20, Rigoutat Riec or any student model oboe offered by companies that make pro models.

I have a 4052 I am keeping around for a backup. It has a liner. It was a very reasonable price for a nearly new oboe, sounds great for my needs. I couldn't turn it down for a backup.

No matter what make sure you can play on the instrument first. I just spent a wonderful afternoon with Peter Hurd playing all of the oboes he has and the least likely instrument played absolutely beautiful for me. The oboe basically picked me, it was a Jarde. It was not one I would have trialed. What a great day. You never know!

Good luck.

I trialed a Fox 400 alongside a Rigoutat, assuming I'd want the Rigoutat. But I hated the Rigoutat, oddly enough. The Fox was way more stable where the Rigoutat really wanted to be flaky. So be it. I kept the Fox!

I always found the Schreiber/Buffet oboes lacked any depth of tone compared to other instruments of a similar price and specification.

Was the Jarde a new instrument or an older one? Regards

Well, I bought a plastic Riec in a bar for $35 quite a while back. It had been sat on as the bottom joint was glued together. However, it played very good.

I also had a gold plated Rigotat about 10 years ago with a perfect scale and feel, but it was a bit brighter than I prefer.

what's the point of gold plating, exactly? just for looks, or what?

Gold plating is mainly cosmetic and is much better for people with silver allergies, but it has no influence on the tone of the instrument.
