So I have my first oboe lesson tomorrow. The teacher is David Schneider here in Philadelphia, PA. A year and a half of working technique on my own. Hopefully I haven't steered myself too far from the norm. Considering I would like to work in the field, this will be a very emotional day for me.

Wow that is great! I played for quite a while before my first oboe lesson. My teacher was pleased, yours should be too.
In junior high my band teacher asked me if I knew what an oboe was. Then he handed me the school oboe and told me I should learn it, that he thought I might be good at it. I was so bad at first my dad told me to practice in the dark! But I am confident that I sound much better than I did all those years ago.

I picked up oboe within a space of 2 months in 7th grade. When I graduated from 8th, my folks bought me private lessons. I had some serious habits to UN-learn, but caught them fairly early, and it was not too traumatic; my teacher was fantastic, teaching me correct breathing AND reed-making within the space of about 8 months!
You've worked hard and I'm SURE you'll get plenty of encouragement.

I am humbled.
The points we focused on are tonal concept, how to hold and play the instrument, and work on musical phrasing. At least I feel I'm directed in the right way. Not gonna lie though, I was really hoping he would have said, "Wow man, you're the best oboist ever!"

Take heart.
Those are the foundations we all need to build upon. My first lesson was playing long A notes ... it takes off from there. Musical phrasing ... tone production go hand in hand.
It sounds like your in good hands.
I heard/saw you play ....... you will catch on fast and do quite well.
