Is the shape of the bore inside English horn similar to an oboe (except for the foot)?
How wide is the top of the English horn bore? Is there a step-like change in the diameter where the air enters from the bocal to the body of the instrument?
I have to ask as I have no access to an English horn to measure it myself. I have a vintage oboe.

I think the bore taper of a cor is less than that of an oboe due to it being a much longer instrument. I'll take some measurements of mine (a Marigaux 930) and post them on here soon.

I think you are right, Chris--I have heard that it is the smaller ratio of bore diameter to length that gives the English horn a darker sound than the oboe. If the large end of the bore is the diameter that is smaller relative to the length, then a straight taper would be necessarily more gradual.
