Robin Great Post.
My only comment is it might be a bit difficult to anaylze the sound apart form the player. Having said that - you can nuance the differences in the character of each Oboe Brand. And of course all depends upon your preference on how an Oboe should sound!
Albrecht Mayer is my favorite among the players for his warm inviting tone and wonderful phrasing.
Thanks,
Mark

Are there any photos of the Rigoutat Thomas(?) models doing the rounds? I haven't seen them for a while.
They had a top joint without the decorative crown resembling the old straight-topped oboes of the past.

You're quite right, Mark, and also You-Tubes made with handy-cams don't help either.
Albrecht Mayer sounded almost as fantastic on his Buffet (with the white reed cap) as he does on his Gebr. Mönning. so the player is everything.
Christophe Hartmann sounds rather clear, but I have heard the Dupin Imperial sound very rich.
It's just too bad that it's difficult to associate player with instrument. Getting more internet recordings this way would be a fascinating study.
Still, this is a really exciting time for young students.... in my day, I only had access to vinyl LP's available in the Conservatoire library (very limited for oboe) and the MSO. The sounds and styles of players worldwide were reserved to the few very rich who could afford to travel during holidays.
