I have an oboe that has been passed down in my family for quite a while. My mother was born in 1961 and she received it from, I BELIEVE, her great uncle. (She passed away in 2008 so I can't ask for sure and I forget). All 3 pieces have the F. Loree stamp, however, I have been researching trying to figure out how old it is, etc., and everything I see says that the serial number is either 1 or 2 letters followed by 2 numbers. The serial number listed on this oboe is "AS 6". There is a space between the letters and number, but is the same in all 3 places. I have attached pictures and can attach more upon request, but can anyone tell me any info about the oboe? I know NOTHING about them besides what I learned the 3 years I played it in school. Thank you!

Yeah, I saw that website, but was confused about the space in the serial #.

If this really is a Lorée A series: NEVER SELL IT! - well, you make that call, but that's what I would do.
I tried one and was simply blown away by it. Looked flimsy and needed key adjustment, but superior to even the new Royal AK they had in terms of blowing and sound. Well worth the expense of having the best repairer tune-up the keywork so it feels like new.

There were some oboes that the importer in the 50's and possibly 60's, had made up by someone and then, branded with the Loree name on them. These were generally sold to schools away from metropolitan centers. Fortunately, Brannen discovered this, as the keywork was noticeably dif-ferent from the standard, Loree style. As a result, Loree discontinued shipping to that importer and went to an open market, distribution policy. There may be more to it than that, but my memory of this is now about 50 years old! (Yikes!) Possibly the oboe under discussion here, is one of those. Regards.

All of the "Chiasserini [Loree] fakes" that I have seen so far (both oboes
and English horns) have had serial numbers beginning with B, such as BG, or (my favorite) "BS." So far, all of the Chiasserini Loree fakes I have had or seen were made by Malerne.
I can not say with absolute certainty that this oboe in question (AS6) is for sure by Loree. Some of the key patterns, such as the left F key touch at the S bend, or the look of the left index B touch, do not seem in character with other AS series Loree oboes I have had.
With very best wishes,
Peter
