It's great to see these masterclasses. How different from the old days, when a kid in a small town had only his one teacher to teach him. I also have Giacobassi's excerpt CD. It is great just to hear different people playing in their own style, but so often the messages are the same. Support, dynamics, intonation, think ahead! Wonderful to have the basics reinforced from around the world....

I agree. This masterclass is a must-see. Superb advice on phrasing, embouchure, breathing, high-notes, difficult transitions, all demonstrated with clear examples - "before" and "after".
A couple of points of interest:
1. She lifts her LH1 instead of rolling onto the half-hole plate
2. She does not use any neck-strap or other support
3. She's obviously playing a thumb-plate instrument. Anyone know what make?

1. The top plate has an adjustment on the lower plate (with the diamond aperture) to screw it down almost closed so LH1 can be lifted off completely instead of rolled downwards to keep it closed - the upper plate will still open fully.
2. Some players have always preferred playing cor without a sling.
3. She plays an older Howarth S2 cor which is lighter in weight than most modern cors.

Although when I say lighter, they're slightly lighter in weight as they haven't got as much metalwork on them as a full Gillet conservatoire system cor.
They're almost identical to the old Louis (Chelsea) cors which they evolved from (likewise with Howarth oboes and d'amores). However, Louis Artist cors were made by Malerne after B&H bought out Louis, Rudall-Carte and various other names.

re: lifting LH 1 on a standard, conservatory system oboe,
my teacher showed me on the oboe that this as a way of making downward interval transition, more sure. Like half-hole D down to the lower G and lower. He said that when the finger rehits the LH1 key, it tends to trap the air, better. It also seemed to work better, too.
