 King Marigaux T355
Author: Zeno

My daughter in high school had her Buffet E11 stolen and we are looking for a replacement. A friend of a friend offered us a King Marigaux 355 and I do not know much about this brand.

Is this a better or worst clarinet than her previous one? What would be a reasonable price to pay for this clarinet? ( the instrument is in mint condition)

Thanks

Not heard of them myself so did a quick search and found this link from 2003. I can't help on price/value though.

I did a quick search on eBay - there is one for $499, seller claims it was refurbished.
"Mint condition" can be anything from unplayable to refurbished.
Maybe speak to the teacher and see if he/she would help to evaluate the instrument.
Depending on where you live, it also could make sense to get a brand new Yamaha or Uebel.
I recently spoke to a very knowledgeable performer who also runs a repair shop.
He said that Uebel clarinets are very good alternative to Buffet but I just looked on his website and the cheapest is over $2K (alternative to Buffet r13) .
If you do buy the King Marigaux, I'd budget minimum $150-200 for adjustments/possible repair.

I believe Marigaux stopped production of clarinets about 20 years ago. They are best known for wonderful oboes and cors.

I’m sure others with more knowledge will chime in shortly, but based on information from Jean Marc Nullet and Steve Sklar, it perhaps has the potential to be a very nice instrument.

From Jean Marc Nullet:

“Concerning the Marigaux range

Marigaux models for 2002:
Marigaux clarinet 200, (S-200) Standard model, Bb, nickel-plated keys
Marigaux clarinet 201, (S-200) Standard model, Bb, silver-plated keys
Marigaux clarinet 300, (S-300), Professional model, Bb, nickel-plated keys
Marigaux clarinet 301, (S-301), Professional model, Bb, silver -plated keys
Marigaux 351 Clarinet "R(oland) S(imoncini)" Symphonie, top of the line, in the key of Bb
Marigaux 352 Clarinet "RS" Symphonie, top of the line, in the key of A
With or without roll keys”

And Steve Sklar:

“King distributed SML clarinets. All SML clarinets distributed by King
had a crown on them. The word “King” was inscribed under the crown.
King Marigaux, King Lemaire, and King Strasser.”
