Vandoren CM390 vs W270 Austrian mouthpieces

I was wondering if anyone has compared the Vandoren's current W270 Austrian mouthpiece to the older version CM390 (VA0)?

When bored out to 1010 specs, the A0 is nearly perfect for me on my Peter Eaton Elites. This was a big and pleasant surprise. I get the tuning of a well designed poly-cylindrical bore without the faff of all the extra Reform Boehm keywork.

I have previously tried quite a few German mouthpieces on the Elites but none seem to work as well as they do on a German bore clarinet. The VA0 produces a full, resonant sound from bottom to top, much like an Oehler or Reform Boehm instrument.

There just seems to be a natural synergy between the 0.73mm * ~30mm mouthpiece and the 15.24mm bore.

I'm looking for a backup for my A0, just in case, but it is now hard to find.

Hi Reformed

I’ve had a similar concern when vandoren stopped making their previous German style mouthpieces and switched to the current. I also wanted a backup.

I was able to track down an older version at Weiner music in NY.

I would contact Vandoren directly ( or their Showroom in NYC ) to find the previous CM390 Austrian mouthpiece.

There just has to be one somewhere on a shelf or forgotten drawer :)

Good luck in your quest.

Denis

Thanks for adding your own experience.

I suppose that with CNC lathes and so on, it is now quite easy to create new mouthpiece models frequently - a bit like mobile phones or any consumer product.

To correct my original post, the A0's tip opening is 0.80 (measured) and the newer W270 is 0.73 (claimed).

A shop in Paris does still have A0's for sale.
