Classical pieces for clar by jazz composers
Author: ruben

Dear friends, I'd like to put together a little programme of "Classical" pieces by jazz composers for clarinet and piano. They don't have to be jazzy. So far, I've only found two: one by Clare Fischer (Sonatine for Clar and piano) and the other by my friend Tony Coe (a page missing! -either he finds it or I'll make him write another one). Would that we had a Classical piece by Bill Strayorn or George Russel ! Your suggestions please.

Mel Powell was a player and arranger who became a Pulitzer Prize winning classical composer. He wrote a piece called Clarinade for Benny Goodman. There's a version for cl. and piano. I don't know if he wrote anything else for cl. and piano.

John Dankworth, the English jazz composer, sax/clarinetist, wrote a suite for Emma Johnson, ‘Suite for Emma’. She’s recorded it as well. Nice stuff, not too taxing.

Andy Firth has written several pieces for clarinet and piano. Some are jazzy and others more classical.

Andre Previn was a jazz pianist before making a name as a conductor.

Previn has composed a Sonata for Clarinet and Piano and a Clarinet Quintet. Tom Martin wrote an article about these in a recent issue of The Clarinet magazine.

Paquito's pieces for clarinet and piano are Cape Cod Files; Three Pieces; and Vals Venezolano and Contradanzo.

Lalo Schifrin wrote Central Park Variations for clarinet and piano.

Jim Guiffre did several compositions for clarinet that range from third stream to classical. These include his five movement Piece for Clarinet and String Orchestra, the sixteen part Mobiles, and a Clarinet Quintet. Scores to some of these are available from MJQ Music, Inc.

Jazz tenor sax great Wayne Shorter wrote Julian Bliss a work for clarinet and orchestra in 2017 called the Sherwood Forest Concerto.

Alessandro Carbonare made a beautiful recording (on clarinet) of the Alto Sax Sonata by Phil Woods.

Artie Shaw Concerto is a blast. Not too easy though.

I would also look at works by Alec Wilder, Bill Douglas, Lennie Niehaus, Alec Templeton.

Following up one of Ed's leads, here's Romantique for clarinet and piano by Lennie Niehaus.

Is this the same Lennie Niehaus who used to play alto sax with Stan Kenton and wrote a jazz conceptions book?
