 Barrel/Mouthpiece Dimentions
Author: GenEric

Hi! My school just got a CNC machine and the first thing that came to my mind was custom barrels and mouthpieces. Are there any resources with dimensions on standard barrels (possibly Moennig?) or mouthpieces? It'll be a fun side project trying to make different barrels.

The best resource would be a barrel that you like. Measure the taper at each end and at a few points inside the bore.

For a mouthpiece, again, facing specs could be measured from a model. I don't know if the CNC can cut the inside bore, chamber and baffle, but those, too can be measured in an existing model, though, to get at the fine details, you might have to cut the mouthpiece in half.

I doubt if most of these dimensions are available - I think they're generally proprietary to the individual manufacturer.

Barrels would be easier as a first project. There are fewer interrelated parameters involved.

This could be a real business opportunity for you and the school (depending on how fine the CNC grinds). The more precise the dimensions, the costlier it is for mouthpiece makers. With the folding of Zinner, everybody has to find other sources for blanks.

I'd call around to mouthpiece providers.

This is some uninformed advice. There is more to making specific products that just saying, “Okay... CNC machine... CHECK!”

Different “CNC” machines often make the bore, as opposed to cutting the mouthpiece chamber. These things look completely different in person.

That said, I wish the OP best of luck trying some stuff out. But let’s just cool it for the minute on replacing Zinner.

GenEric,

On the subject of using CNC machines to make clarinet barrels and mouthpieces, one person not to miss would be Wesley Rice. He has been making barrels this way for some time and more recently has collaborated with at least three mouthpiece designers/makers to produce mouthpiece models with them. He makes the Clark Fobes 10K model to Fobes' specifications, as well as the David McClune FMK model and has co-designed and produced the Rice/Chris Hill mouthpiece.

Certainly look into what Brad Behn is doing with barrels and bells as well as mouthpieces and the continuing use of CNC by D'Addario in its Reserve line (especially the new Evolution mouthpiece model) and whatever Backun will be doing in the future. Some barrel makers, like Guy Chadash, may offer apprenticeships.

Sorry, what I mean is that the mouthpiece guy (pick a name), has all the dimensions he wants for his mouthpiece (ie, I sat down with one recently bemoaning the fact that he has to spend exponentially more to have a demo created when you move to thousands of a mm as opposed to hundredths) and he needs someone with a machine (if he's not laying out that capital expense for his own machine......tens of thousands?) to created the model, or produce the run.

I would think there are still people out there who don't yet have a replacement for the Zinner stock that will run out in a few years.

Each side helps each other, AND helps the rest of us have more mouthpieces to buy! It's a win, win, win. No competition or animus intended.
