 evette schaffer clarinet

Hello, I'm no musican, nor a collector. I have an old Evette and Schaffer model E clarinet. Seems to be in really good condition, case is pretty good shape outside, so, so on the inside. I've been reading up on these a little. Seems like it's from 53 to 71 or so. I know this was their next to proffesional line, what I'm confused about is the serial#. Buffet#'s put it at 1930, but I've read those #'s aren't correct with E&S's. I'm looking for info here, maybe what it could be worth? Thanks.

You're probably either reading the serial number list wrong or the instrument is too old to be included on it. Is there a letter prefix to the number? Is the number itself 4 digits or 5? Can you give us at least everything but the last two digits, (e.g. A43xx). Without at least that, you probably won't get much help.

Best regards,
jnk

Sorry about that. The # is K 6109. Thanks.

You were probably looking at the wrong serial number list. 6109 would give you a manufacturing year of 1930 on the list for Buffet's professional clarinets. But you should have been looking at the E13 list. The one at this site (and a number of other places around the internet) doesn't go low enough for your instrument. It starts at (K)10109 which was made in 1961. The serial number lookup on Buffet's website, however, does return an entry for an E&S clarinet made in Novermber, 1954. That should be yours.

I would expect your instrument is marked "Master Model" because I have never seen an E&S from around 4000 to a bit over 10000 that wasn't. If yours is not a Master Model, please let me know.

K7610 (Master Model) appearing to be in need of a complete overhaul and most likely a new case, just sold on eBay for $262. That instrument is probably identical to yours so I would expect, in similar condition, yours would bring a similar price but I won't guarantee it. The buyer may have overpaid. Not all E&S Master Models are identical. As far as I have been able to determine, Buffet did not introduce its (then) "new" polycylindrical bore to the E&S model until sometime around 1960-61. This was a significant design change. Therefore, as a class, I consider E&S clarinets (both master model and otherwise) with a serial number of at least 11000 more attractive than E&S Master Models in the 4000 to 10000 range. I would have expected the instrument on eBay to have sold more in the neighborhood of $150 - $200, perhaps even less given the condition of the instrument in the photos. Some buyers on eBay and elsewhere will not make this distinction, however.

Best regards,
jnk

That is about what I had concluded. One # suggested 1930, another 53 or so. I do not see the master model logo or emblem on here anywhere. The company logo on all the pieces are pretty worn, but I can see it pretty clearly with a magnifying glass. That said, I don't think it's a master model, unless I've manged to overlook it. Thanks for your input.
