 Backun Barrels for Eb Clarinet
Author: kfunk01

Hi,

Okay So I have an Eb Soprano Clarinet that is consistantly playing extremely sharp tried everything new Mouthpiece, Ligature, reeds... I was looking into a new barrel... *cheapest solution* next to buying a new one.... And yes the thought of is it the player has crossed my mind... :P I was wondering if anyone has purchased a backun barrel or tried them out on the Eb and how they like them. Thanks for getting back if you do!

Krystal

PS BTW this is an older model clarinet no where near new...

I have an old Selmer Eb that I had some tuning problems on years ago. I got a Clark Fobes barrel that helped tremendously. I also played a Robert Scott for a time that was very good. It is synthetic. Muncy Winds may carry both. They have the Scott for $59- a real bargain.

Good news for both Ed & Krystal:

I play Eb Clarinet at WICKED in NYC every night (350 times a year), along with a bunch of other horns, and at a bunch of different venues.

Morrie Backun sent me a few of his Eb barrels to try a few years ago, and I haven't taken one of them off since. If you get a good one from him, you're in luck, keep it.

Clark Fobes sent me 4 of his wonderful Eb extensions to try a few months ago, and I haven't taken a really good one off since. They make a big improvement in the pitch & quality of an Eb Clarinet.

So, if you two are interested in new improvements to the pitch and general sound of your Eb Clarinets, get in touch with Morrie & Clark. Their equipment is great...!

I have not been paid, or received any free equipment from either of these fine craftsmen. Good luck with your search.

Another vote for the Fobes barrels and extensions! They are wonderful. It's the first time you'll hear people sayt "what a pretty sound from the Eefer."

I was very much impressed with the Fobes extension that came with a horn for which I was making a barrel.
I made one extension once for a high pitch Eb...It worked fine, but it was not the easiest job, and I thereafter eschewed making them.

Sometimes these extensions appear on that unmentionable sale site and I think I saw one once on the woodwind.org classified, which also gets its share of specialty bells, barrels, and other goodies. (for the GAS-ophile)

Question: I read somewhere that the Fobes extension only fits on Buffet eefers.. I have a Noblet Artist Eb clarinet myself. Is it true that the extension would not fit on this clarinet?

Most accurate way to find out:

Email Clark.

Thanks for the suggestion Mark.

After mailing him my question, he told me to measure my bell tenon... which was 0.927 inch.
Clark then told me 'that should work'.

I'm in exactly this same position - I have a Noblet Eb clarinet that plays consitently sharp. But, I can't find a good way to measure the top tenon - any suggestions? The only thing I could think of without having tools was to find the circumference with a thin piece of paper and divide by pi to get the diameter - for a Fobes barrel. But mine seems to come out to 1.3. Any suggestions?

Disclaimer: I make and sell barrels

Ideally: You need to measure the tenon in 2 diameters in both areas that do not have cork covering them, and also the diameter of the cork area itself. Calipers are helpful. OR measure the internal diameter of the socket of a barrel that fits.....take it in 2 directions owing to the naturally occuring ovoid shape that develops. See the attached jpg. for type of caliper.

Alternatively: supply the maker of the barrel with a spare barrel that fits nicely, to be returned with the new barrel

Another alternative: See if a standard stock barrel of a Buffet model fits your horn. If so, the maker usually has the nominal measurements for it.

Common measure of Buffet RC model is
BOTTOM SOCKET in inches is:
.64 DEEP
.815 WIDE

I have not had an opportunity to try Backun barrels on E flat clarinet, but I have had the opportunity to use a great Clark Fobes extension and barrel on my Buffet RC e-flat clarinet and they are superb! The extension is so effective in smoothing out the sound of the low and mid register and the barrel improves the upper clarion twelfths! I also have used this equipment recently with the Broadway Touring Production of WICKED and recent Houston Ballet performances of the Ravel Piano in G . The high solo that is early in the third movement and the lead tutti passages later in the movement were so easy with the Fobes barrel and extension! Highly recommended. I also have not been paid or received free equipment form Mr. Fobes.

How funny is that, Chetclarinet ????

We're both using Fobes Eb clarinet extensions in the same production of WICKED in two different cities...!

Sounds like Clark should use that in one of his ads.

I just did a pre-record for the MACY'S July 4th fireworks show for TV, using the Fobes Eb extension, so check it out in July.
