 My Backun Mouthpiece Impressions

Hey guys,

just wanted to share my experience with these Mpcs. Unfortunately WWBW only had the Camereta 0.99 and the Tradicional 1.06..

First one I played was the Traditional with 3 and 1/2 reeds and amazingly the seemed much harder then when on the M30 which has 1.15 tip opening. Stability of this mouthpiece is astounding, intervals are much easier to play and the biggest thing I noticed was articulation. It is so much easier to tongue on this mouthpiece. I felt more secure on this mouthpiece than my M30 and played a jury on a few days later. This mouthpiece also has a lot of hold.

I played the camereta with size 4 reeds. This MPC was way too closed for me and all reeds seemed harder on this MPC compared to an M15 1.03.

Im very very very impressed with these but the only downside I can think of is pitch... althouh very consistent its on the high side. Maybe this is a isolated problem with the models I received but I don't know.

It's still not worth 500$ though =D

Thanks for the report, the feeling of resistence may come from a shorter facing. Both the M15 and M30 have *very* long facings. If you are using the VD 13 series, then it is not surprising the pitch is higher on the backun, but nothing that a backun barrel can't fix :)
Cheers,

For the record, I play Vandorens, but Kevin, how can someone who goes to Interlochen and plans (I'm guessing) to be a performer not think $500 is worth a piece of a equipment they seem to prefer. Maybe I'm infering too much from your post, but it seems like you prefered the Backun. These are the tools of your future profession. Seems like a small price to pay, considering.

*I don't want this to turn into another thread on the price of Backun products. I'm just pointing out a different way for him to look at the price on a product he seems to like.

It won't. We've had enough of those.

kev, you said, "I felt more secure on this mouthpiece ." I think that says a lot for the Backun mouthpiece. The pitch can be adjusted (as suggested above) with reeds or barrel or both.

But, perhaps you haven't tried very many high dollar mouthpieces (since you're using a M30. You should try some more by some of our sponsors like Grabner, Smith and others and compare them to the experience with the Backun.

Price is something that you need to decide for yourself. If it does what you want and you are wanting to become a professional player, perhaps you should go for it.

I realize there are other factors to reed strength ;) i was just stating what I experienced. The facing length is obviously shorter on both Backuns than the M30 and M15..which both have VERY long facings.

About the money issue, I was just saying it's not worth $500. I'm still very interested in buying one, I just think its very overpriced.

for $500 I really need to try his other models/get more of the same type to find a great MPC.

much higher on my clarinet than the other vadoren 13 series I tried. On an R13 it seemed to be more controllable
