One in Four Classical Musicians Use Beta Blockers
Author: Ken Shaw 2017
Date:   2006-03-24 17:10

One in four classical musicians in large American orchestras use beta blockers. http://www.journalism.ubc.ca/thunderbird/2005.03/features/betablockers.html

The story is based on data from 1987, and we've discussed it here. See for example http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=9205&t=8921, with informed medical opinion from Diane Karius and expert opinion from a top player, Greg Smith.

I use a beta blocker for problems unrelated to musical performance, and find that it eliminates stage fright, which I sometimes have, which has been strong enough to interfere with performance. On the other hand, Using it definitely changes my performance, and I lose a little edge. I sometimes skip the pill on the morning of a performance.

For those who use BBs, what's the effect your playing?
