Not at all on all counts:

1) Metal clarinets were made as professional clarinets for many years
2) Plastic was invented well prior to the advent of metal clarinets; however, plastic was considerably more expensive than wood or metal.
3) Metal clarinets can sound just as good if not better than plastic.
