 mexican clarinet music...

Was driving back to work from lunch, since I am working on learning spanish I had the radio set to one of the mexican radio stations here...usually the music is pretty bland stuff, but today they played a really cool tune that I think would be a 'polka', though I don't know if it is called that in mexico...tuba on the bass, wonderful clarinet playing improv fills around the singers vocals.

Wondering if anyone else knows of this style from mexico...is it very popular there?

Other folks who might know more about Latin American music might have more extensive info to offer, but I'm pretty sure I have some idea what you're talking about...

Polka-like music from Mexico falls into the genre known as Norteno, meaning "Norththern," and referring, of course, to said region of Mexico. The polka element is evidently derived from the influence of Czech and Austrian soldiers who arrived during Mexico's brief period of Hapsburg rule. Of course, nowadays all Norteno songs are in Spanish, and the style has been thoroughly assimilated into Mexican culture. I actually hear the music quite a bit in my neighborhood in Chicago; usually it's accordion-oriented (button box stuff, I believe), but I have heard some pretty wild brass band variations as well, which might be on the lines of the music to which you refer.

Thanks for the response...I have heard a bit of the accordian based stuff here, which I like alot, but usually the mexican radio here has more whimpy modern pop stuff with elec. guitar and keyboards... but the tune I heard yesterday which prompted me to post was the first I had heard a mexican brass band...it was really cool.

I shall look for some next time I am at a cd store.
