What's he playing on? I know people have inquired in the past about what kind of equipment he uses, but I don't remember seeing any definitive answers. Plus, since it's been a while I thought I would attempt a new inquiry. I remember someone saying that they thought he used an O'brien MPC, but I was curious what kind (in terms of facing, tip opening, chamber size, etc.). I realize there are plenty of individual factors that affect his tone, but I am still quite curious what kind of equipment is being used. When I first heard him I felt his tone was very close to what I am trying to get at. Also, for those that know his sound, how would you describe it (I know that this is highly subjective). In turn, does anyone know of other players with a similar tone?

I have no idea how you are going to get the answers to all of your questions unless Mr. Speed himself should come upon this board and respond to your post personally, but, fwiw, he definitely plays on some sort of crystal mouthpiece, or at least he was the last few times I saw him play within the past 2-3 years. (I'm assuming that you're referring to his clarinet rather than hs tenor setup.)
I don't think I can draw any direct comparisons to other players regarding his tone quality of improvisation style. All I can say is that, to me, his playing is superficially lacking in emotion but actually quite expressive somehow, in a manner that seems more reminiscent of an indie rock or even grunge aesthetic than anything directly related to jazz. Whatever, he's one of my favorite jazz reedmen, and his clarinet playing with the group Pachora is essentially what got me interested in Balkan music (well, that and Kusturica's Underground).
Honestly, I don't think that this thread will generate much in the way of responses but it's good to see a musician like Speed getting some recognition on this board.

When I met him 2 or 3 years ago after a Slavic Soul Party! concert here in Minneapolis, I asked him about his setup. All I remember was that it was indeed an O'Brien mouthpiece. Can't for the life of me remember the mpc model, reeds, lig, etc...

I tried out chris´ setup some years ago. Then, he was playing a R13 clarinet and an old Obrian crystal mouthpiece.
I hope this helps.
