hi everyone,

i've been playing the clarinet for 13 years both for my own enjoyment and to get in touch with my greek roots. my cousin who specializes in greek and middle eastern instruments recently told me about the zournas, and i'm wondering if anyone here plays it or knows anything about its availability/playability? i am interested in trying to play it, i would appreciate any insights. thanks.

Never played one; have only seen and heard them. A capped double reed attached to a recorder - like instrument. Incredibly loud :-)

I have played one. Very loud! Please don't practice in your apartment at night and don't move into my neighborhood if you get serious on it. I played drone, but I couldn't get the circular breathing thing.

The musicians in LA associated with the folkdance group AMAN played zurna pretty well, although this might be an oxymoron.

With all the arts funding drying up, AMAN may or may not still be in existence. For a while their musicians also toured separately as The NAMA Orchestra, and made 5 LP's. They had one of the first Klezmer revival recordings in the late 1970's. The ex-manager of NAMA lives here in Ann Arbor and still has a closet full of their vinyl - he might be able to to put you in touch with a zurna virtuoso. You can also get an LP for little more than shipping charges.

Sidebar: Some years ago there was an interview with Ivo Papasov on NPR. He said that his father traded two zurnas for his first clarinet. It was embarassing. the interviewer thought that a zurna was some kind of money.

Hello:
The Greeks have several names for this instrument, depending on region: karamoudza, pipiza, zournas, zournadi. You can see a couple of photos on my website if you like. If you have some questions, feel free. There are recordings available of this music. I play the karamoudza, and one of our traditions at our house is for my son and I to bring in the new year at midnight playing a pair of them; they are LOUD!
