 Kohlert & Sons C Clarinet
Author: Colin
Date:   2002-04-09 11:55

I have recently acquired a Kohlert & Sons clarinet, which was used by a late friend of mine during the 1930's (many years before I was born!). I am attempting to identy the age, history, and possible value (in the broadest sense) of this instrument, and welcome all information received.

The instrument, which is wooden, is marked:

V. Kohlert & Sons
Graslitz
Bohemia
C
216534

Based on my records here at the National Music Museum (America's Shrine to Music Museum) it should have come from the 1910-1920 era. All of our records here indicate that the Kohlert and Sons clarinets come from that time period (NOTE: in our collection). Hope that I could help.

Research on my own Kohlert has indicated to me that the way the country of manufacture is listed can help identify the manufacture date (the New Langwill Index is of no help on this one). The fact that yours is indicated as Graslitz, Bohemia would indicate pre 1920s or so. For a period of time after that the country was identified as Czecho-Slovakia, and later (late 1930s or so) Czechoslovakia. Graslitz stayed in the same spot, they just changed the country name a few times.

Additional info:

During World War II, the Germans attempted to move the Kohlert operation to Germany and met with less than spectacular success. There was a later attempt to reopen the operation in Graslitz, but many of the tools remained in Germany. After the war the Kohlert brand was manufactured in a number of places (including the United States) wherever the original craftsmen ended up. Unfortunately because of the loss of many tools, the splitting up of the team or whatever, the quality was rather spotty. My research has indicated that a pre-war Kohlert from Grasllitz is likely to be of considerably better quality than a post war Kohlert model.

ClarinetQween - sorry to break the thread,

[Do not change thread topics like that. Start a new one - but ...
This is for ethnic clarinet, not general questions. These kinds of questions belong in the Clarinet BBoard.]

For the purpose of a book I'm searching for all the written and verifiable material I can find on the Kohlert family and their operations between 1840, when vincenz set up in Graslitz to the 1960s when they went bankrupt. In particular, I want to know about the nautre of their eviction from the Czech Republic post-war. Has there been a history written on the family or is there a book that includes detail. I have an old Bb and am also trying to date it. Its serial number is 262612 and I think it must date from about 1938 or even during the War.

One might check the International Double Reed Society Journal for articles on Kraslice and Kohlert as I recall that there was information on Kohlert history and bassoons. I have a friend with a Kohlert bass clarinet, extended to low C by Glen Johnston and Nick Spirito. It has a very resonant sound. Good luck!

I have a Bb with the same markings, Graslitz, Bohemia, which I bought from a friend on the GTC for 250 USD. I would love a C to match...does it have four rings by any chance? That's my ideal set up.....

I can't believe that you'd want to part with it, but if you do....

all the best

My father passed on to me a clarinet that he used in a German band in Covington/Cincinnatti area in the 30's. It is marked: " V.Kohlert Sons, makers, Graslitz, Czecho-Slovakia, C " and he referred to it as E flat. It would need to be cleaned and re-corked. It is not broken. I would like for it to get into the hands of someone who would bring it back to life and use it for its intended purpose.
