 Band-in-a-box for Klezmer?
Author: vintschevski

Hello!

Has anybody had any experience using Band-in-a-box or anything similar to generate parts for arrangements of Klezmer tunes? Or for Balkan and Eastern European music? Is there anything that works well for doing this? I have had no experience myself of using any such programmes, so I have no practical idea of what they can really do.

Does anybody consider it worth the money to invest in something like this to produce arrangements? I know the basics of writing parts, but it's still a very time-consuming chore for me, with results that aren't usually the most inspired or inspiring.

Thanks!!

I have used tools like Finale to write parts, and it has been very nice to be able to play out the voices alone or in different combinations, especially if you can assign a different voice to each part. An oboe may not really sound like an oboe, but it is still helpful to hear an approximation of the final product.

There are issues with quarter tones that I am not prepared to address. Barring that, the software won't care about the musical style.

A nearby university with a music school will have a lab with music notation software, and technicians are always ready to show off their toys.

Thanks, Ralph!

I'm not sure, though, that you've actually addressed any of my questions. I am familiar with notation software for writing parts by oneself, but I understand that Band-in-a-Box goes beyond that, and it generates parts to a melody. I guess that you have not had any experience of Band-in-a-Box, so maybe didn't understand that I'm asking whether it can provide parts that are stylistically suitable for Klezmer and Balkan and Eastern European tunes. What might work for a rock tune or a country and western tune might not be so great for Klezmer. I don't know, I lack the experience and the musical knowledge.

Think I posted this for someone else. Check with your local schools - they may have a music lab with BIAB that you can play on. Come in with a tune you want to experiment with. The school will probably have specific access requirements, but many techs are happy to talk about their toys.

BIAB comes with 2 klezmer styles. More can be found obtained from:

I like to practice with BIAB, but it's nowhere near as good as playing with a real band.

hi vintschevski - maybe one solution would be to share the parts that have been written for klezmer music on a website somewhere - the little group that I play with [ flute, violin, cello , accordion , clarinets and occasionally brass ] - now has a collection of around 30 tunes mostly with parts for each instrument that have been arranged for the popular pieces we play - I can get these sent on PDF files if there is such a site ? I dont know our arrangements fall into the inspiring category tho !

PS having a professional jazz /classical musician /key board player do all the work for us [ as well as accompany us] has been- and continues to be - a real bonus

Jacky
