 Jim Stoyanoff plays in Manchester

I heard Jim Stoyanoff play at a dance camp at High Scope Camp (Manchester, MI) two weeks ago. He used an Amati G Albert clarinet exclusively. Let us say that everyone, including the musicians, were highly lubricated, but this didn't seem to phase anyone and his playing was terrific.

Jim was born in Chicago to a Macedonian father and Greek mother, giving him access to both active communities. He wrote an article for The Clarinet in 1990 about use of the Albert system in ethnic music, which was supposed to be the first of a series, but I don't think there were any more.

When I spoke with him, he said pretty much what was in the 1990 article, about systematically deconstructing the carefully engineered intonation of his instrument, in order to achieve the specific tunings required.

He was using a barrel-mounted TC-R pickup from TAP Electronics in Athens, with a wireless setup, and it sounded good, although Jim had some comments about required EQ corrections. The wireless let him get out into the middle of the dances, which was very cool.
