 Serkan Cagri

There is a thread about Macedonian clarinet on the Bulletin board, and sensing a lack of knowledge of Balkan music there, I posted a bit of Serkan Cagri. I found him on YouTube by simply browsing. Who is he and what is his nationality? Obviously this kind of music is derived from 'folk', as I understand it. Is he also a 'pop' star?

Well, not that I'm an expert in languages, but the language on the website looks to be Turkish to me.

The name is definitely Turkish, and would be pronounced something like "Sir-Kan Cha-UH-ree" I think. At least that is what I am guessing, based on very simple knowledge of Turkish characters. I'm just not sure where the accent in the first name goes...

As far as the music and videos, he appears to be playing a low G clarinet in the first Youtube video I found, which is very common in Turkish music as well as some Greek styles. I don't know what the mini instrument with a clarinet mouthpiece is on the second one, but the "taksim" video is a really good video of improvised "klarnet" stuff. This style, in my understanding, is closer to Arabic uses of makams than to Balkan uses of makams. There are certain notes of each makam which are used at specific places in each taksim, and how the performer gets there and back is what is the deal.

Some of the others are actually tunes from the "classical" Turkish repertoire.

My Turkish isn't good enough to tell if he's Rom or "plain" Turkish...I have a friend looking into that for me!

My dear husband, the linguistically educated says the name is Turkish, not Rom. The playing does not sound Macedonian or Rom for that matter.

"I don't know what the mini instrument with a clarinet mouthpiece is on the second one"

Looks like an Adler chalumeau to me. I had one, but loaned it away. It is basically a wooden tube, with fingerholes quite like a recorder, and a clarinet mouthpiece. Range is one octave only; you can overblow it but they be a gap between registers.

My friend Serkan Çağrı was born in Kesan, Edirne/Turkey in 1976

Serkan is a very popular Turkish clarinet virtiousse and plays on G(Amati and Hammerschmidts), has an album named "nefesim/my breath. He has a programme on Turkish National TV Channel "TRT" invites famous musicians from all over the world including Vassilis Saleas. And He is also an academician in Istanbul Technical University, teaching, researching and writing on Turkish clarinet. He wrote a book about playing technics of G clarinet. His style could be defined as Balkan-Turkish Folk, Fusion, World music.

But most important, Famous Czech company Amati-Denak has recently launched a G clarinet model called "Modell Serkan Cagri" . He adjusted key system of ACL 340 G model for Turkish playing and Amati started to produce this model.

He gave many concert with Giora Feildman and Vassilis Saleas.
