Hi!
I am an amateur when it comes to ethnic clarinet, but recently I have purchased a book with several Norwegian folk songs. I started playing some of them and, well, it's really fun.
My question is regarding the tempo of the following dances:
Polka, waltz, polska (Nordic), mazurka and reel.
I have got some idea as far as the tempo of these, but I would like to know what the "standard" tempo is (in beats per second). If there are any individual opinions regarding the subject, please feel free to enlighten me.

Are you actually going to play them for dancers? I browsed your orchestra's website and I can't tell what you actually do. Is it mainly concert performance but not for dancing? Then you need to watch those dancers dance to other bands or recordings and discuss with them the tempos, as well.
I'm bad with beats per minute, but I play for dancing regularly and if I'm not clued in by the dance leader I pick a tempo I know that is close and keep an eye on the dancers to see if they are labored (then too fast, so slow it down), or look like they are dragging (then speed it up).

These dances are something I do outside of my orchestra. It is actually work-related, as I am doing some season work at a museum. The idea is to play for guests at the museum, but I'm not sure what tempo I should play the songs.

You need to get to some local folk dance classes right away to check out the tempos, not to mention the overall style of playing. Do you do any of these dances yourself?
