 Bend/Smear

What is the best way for me to learn this? I am playing in a dixieland band and want to learn how to bend or smear or both. I am at a loss right now. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I bend by lowering my larynx and relaxing my emboucher. Tiping the bell up helps, I think that changes the emboucher relative to the mouthpiece.

The smears I do are done by 'half-holing' - I slide my fingers off the holes gradudally - getting 1/4 tones as I go. When sped up it sounds like a smear.

it's all with the tongue, you are just going to have to experiment with it. one thing you could do is think of the word sing and feel your tongue position for -ing. basically smearing is raising and lowering the back of your tongue, if you get scoops in the high register that is smearing, but at a very fast pace. you could also think of 'gargling'. that low tongue position is what you're after.
