 Hard mid B playing
Author: Rusty

I`ve been playing a plateau clarinet for quite a while and it has been effortlessly, easy. Notes flow smoothly and without a squeek. I thought though that I should join the masses and see how much progress I can make in the time available on the std. clarinet.
The clarinet I`m trying on is only a student`s cheapie (although a new one) and all notes play OK except the mid stave line B. It needs a lot more air pressure and finger accuracy. Because I hav`n`t experienced this with the plateau I`m posting to find out if this is common and if it is not suggestions on where I might look to check for an equipment fault. I`ve looked as closely as I can for poor seating of the pad that is closed when B is played using the left hand little finger. Seems OK.

The "B" action must also close the "C" pad, this should be automatic if the crow's foot (under the RH pinky cluster) is set correctly.

What happens if you go down from C (leaving the fingers there) down to B? This should work regardless of how messed-up the linkage at the crow's foot is.

When possible, I always play the mid-staff B always with both left (on B touchpiece) and right (on C touchpiece) fingers.

If that's the case, check (or have checked) the linkage between the B and C keys.
