 Advice for my First Musical
Author: Majestas

I am playing my first ever musical this week, which is Shrek. I switch between reed 1 and 2 and am playing the bass clarinet and clarinet parts.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had any advice for my first musical. Its not like what you would play in band. Some of these are really hard to count and as a high school student playing in a pit that is mostly professionals, it is a little intimidating.

Thanks!

Hope it went well. The advice I would have given you is to learn all the music before the first rehearsal. Then show up early, and be ready to play when the rehearsal begins (e.g., a 7 pm rehearsal does not mean show up at 7, it means you start to plat at 7).

Also, bring a pencil. And don't complain about page turns or other similar problems. It's your job to figure out how to do it.

Don't be afraid to ask for help from the pros. They should be happy to help you. But also don't be afraid to play. They will not respect you if you just sit there like a scared kid! They want to hear you, and see what you can do.
