I was wondering how hard the reed 2 part is in Thoroughly Modern Millie. I play clarinet, and someone else is playing flute and sax for it (I can't play sax well enough and they can't play clarinet well enough). Are there a lot of clarinet parts/solos? A friend of mine is playing reed 1 clarinet and they're curious what that part is like. I guess what I'm asking is a rundown of reed 1 and 2 and any tricky songs in either part. Thanks!

This is one of the best musicals. Reed 2 does have the bulk of the clarinet solos, and lots of fun ones too. Lots of jazz and fast lines. My daughter played Reed 3 and wants to do this musical again sometime, but on Reed 2.

One of my favorite shows...reed 2 is the 2nd alto, most of the lead clarinet lines and the jazz clarinet solos. Not a lot of flute. Some soprano with both reed 1 and 3 (yes, a soprano trio; fun). Reed 1 is the lead sax, flute, some piccolo, some but not a lot of clarinet and the soprano stuff. If having the chance to play it again, I want reed 2 all to myself. There were only 2 of us covering the 4 reed books, so will copied the pieces from the 4 and made 2 custom books from them.

There are a lot of important clarinet solos in the Reed 2 book, at least one important solo in 5 sharps fairly early on. There's about eight bars or so of flute in there as well.

Pardon me for reviving an old thread, but I will be playing MILLIE again in November. This time we have 4 reed players but not all multi-reedists. I got copies of all 4 books and assembled custom versions of the books. As a result, I get all the lead clarinet parts of reed 2 mixed with the lead alto and soprano parts of reed 1. The best of both worlds. The lady who is playing the lead flute/picc parts from reed 1 gets the 2nd alto parts from reed 2. Then we have a clarinet only player and a guy who will play oboe, bass clarinet, and hopefully, tenor sax.
Looking forward to doing one of my favorite shows again.
