Re: Beginning doubling on clarinet from trumpet

It's been almost 2 years, and I am able to play 3rd in our symphonic band. This is sooner than I would have expected. I still mostly play trumpet, some music has both trumpet and cornet parts, so they need me there as it takes all of us to cover the parts, but when there are four of us on a single first part I am free to hop over to the clarinet section.

Some of the 3rd clarinet parts are a struggle for me, but most I am able to play. I do have to practice the parts and learn them.

We played some clarinet choir music last concert and it was my first concert on clarinet. I won't say it was anything to write home about, but I did it.

I am also playing the piccolo trumpet parts in our brass quintet on clarinet. So far just in rehearsal. It seems to work pretty well.

Nothing like sticking with it and putting in lots of shed time under a good teacher.

Buying a new R13 didn't hurt either.

Current equipment is an M13 mpc, 3.5 reed, Polaris tunable barrel, vandoren optimum ligature, R13 clarinet.

I customized some of the keys for ergonomics, I'm learning how to do that, makes a big difference. We are in Rubank advanced book 1. But I play a lot out of Klose and Rose, and trumpet stuff. Rubank advanced duets are fun now that I am starting to be able to play some of them up to tempo.

All attempts at a more open tipped mpc have so far failed, both the M15, and the 5RV lyre (the desired outcome, but still seems way beyond me at this time).

Aging classical trumpet player learning clarinet as a second.
