I haven't played the book myself.

If you're a decent flutist, you'll probably find GOOD (expensive) bamboo flutes a pleasure to play--inferior ones will be a struggle to play in tune and will likely have uneven tone.

I like these flutes as a low-cost and highly playable substitute for bamboo. They are being used by the players on Broadway for shows like Tarzan.
