 Headjoint: No Sound when Covered
Author: drbarrentine

I was recently asked by a junior high band director why a student's flute headjoint did not make a sound when the end is covered by the hand. As you all know, it is supposed to make a low sound. When this student plays the headjoint by itself without the end covered it makes the normal sound, however as soon as the end is covered no sound comes out at all. Can anyone explain why? Thanks!

This is interesting. Both Yamaha CY and EC can produce two notes withe their ends covered.

It's highly likely that the lip plate has a leak in it, the headcork is old and loose and/or missing... Can you see a headcork in it?Is the headcork easy to move in and out? If it is, you definitely need a new headcork on your flute! Either way, I'd take it in to be looked at by a professional repair person.
