Hello all! I am a clarinetist dabbling in the black art of double reeds. I have an elderly Puechner/Moeller bassoon with which I've been tinkering for a while, and have read the posts regarding stitching with interest. My question is: will tightly stitching the center of a large-diameter pad allow it to conform to the circumference/curvature of the boot joint, or is there an additional trick to getting a seal? For instance, French cementing a cork shim under one side of the pad, followed by temporarily wrapping a rubber-band around the pad-cup-joint assembly to create a curvature and thence a seal overnight? Or does one simply slather a dollop of beeswax and mutter a prayer wherever a leak presents itself?
