 Cane grain.. that rhymes! :)

Hi,

Can anyone please tell me what effect fine vs coarse grain in cane has, if any apart from aesthetics and feel on the lips?
I have a feeling coarse grain is easier to muck up when scraping, not as hard (dense) and can more easily become waterlogged.

Thanks!

The coarser the grain, the softer the cane and the darker the sound. I cannot play on coarse grain becaiuse I get no projection, and I cannot play on fine grain, which produces no depth of sound for me. Fortunately, there are many medium grain canes to use.

Thanks for your insights Dane.
So with "no depth of sound", do you mean that you find reeds with fine grain bright or on the buzzy side regarding tone?

Somebody described the sound of fine grained cane as "glassy." I find it too bright without any of the lower overtones. Plus, fine grain cane is often harder/denser,which means you must scrape a lot off the back to make it responsive.
