 Removing the octave vents
Author: t.s.

I recently purchased a cheap Lark oboe to practice overhauling. However, I'm a bit puzzled as to how to remove the octave vents. There seems to be no indents to insert a vent removal tool.

Use the removal tool to mark where the prongs will go, then carefully drill blind holes where the marks are so you can then use the removal tool to undo and refit them. Use a scriber to mark the points deeper to locate the drill bit - use a 0.7mm drill (which is the average diameter of an oboe/cor 8ve vent).

If you do happen to drill all the way through, then they'll be sealed when you refit the vents with wax as you'd do anyway - never dry fit 8ve vents on any oboes (unless they have a plastic or Teflon gasket) as you can't guarantee an airtight seal when it's just metal on metal.

Begs the question... how was it installed? Is it really two pieces, threaded together?

Thank you Chris for the detailed explanation. Now i just have to wait for my removal tool (read: crab forks) to arrive.

I used crab forks to remove the vents on my B&H Regent (or B&H Reject as it was dire) when I first started playing oboe. They were just the right distance to fit in the dimples.
